Global warming is widely recognised as the world’s most significant threat to our thrivability and planting trees is known to be our most effective natural solution. At THIS IS A LOVE SONG, we are all about finding ways to make fashion more green. Every day it is our mission to not only make clothing that makes us look good and feel good but also do good. Producing fashion ethically was always at the core for our brand and when we discovered eco-friendly fabric options we soon made the switch and incorporated mindful choices into our business but this wasn’t enough. When we came to learn that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world (alarming, I know!)... It was too late for us to stop our brand since it is also the livelihood of our small team in Bali, Indonesia who passionately make your clothes everyday so we knew that we needed to find a way to be part of the solution rather than be part of the problem. Plus, we all need good quality underwear, bras and comfortable basics, am I right?
Well, when we did our calculations we discovered that our small business emits 11 tonnes of CO2 each year which is 22,000lbs that we needed to offset if we don’t want to be part of the problem. We knew we needed to do something and with the help of 1% for the Planet we finally found our match and together we are launching the ONE TREE WITH TIALS Campaign today in celebration of World Wildlife day. Partnering with Forest Smoothie® means that we can take a holistic approach and use the best of modern science and indigenous wisdom to protect and plant trees in Indonesia.
The World’s first reforestation smoothie, Forest Smoothie® helps people turn their everyday food choices into positive change for the planet by partnering with cafes & restaurants all over the world . Partners create the Forest Smoothie® using local produce, place the Forest Smoothie® on their menu and donate 50% of the net profit from every sale. The profit from each smoothie is then used to plant and protect trees and educate the next generation of children. Places where they work include Borneo & Sumatra where the rainforest along with hundreds of plant and animal species, are being lost at an alarming rate for timber, precious metals and agriculture
A recent study by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) revealed that adding 2.5 billion acres of forest by 2050 would remove 225 billions tons, equivalent to 2/3 of our anthropogenic (human caused) CO2 and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees celsius. I know that sounds overwhelming so in simple words it means that planting trees can really save our planet so we need to do more of it. Starting today we will plant a tree for every order you place on our website.
If you order over 2 items, we will plant another tree for every 2 items of clothing. After much research we discovered that your favorite TIALS piece produces around 7lbs of CO2 which is 1/7th of a tree but since we encourage you to wear your pieces for life (not joking!) this means that we also need to calculate the life of the garment which includes washing and drying (although we prefer that you hang to dry as stated in your care labels!). So if we get into the nitty gritty details that means that you will most likely emit around 16lbs more of CO2 if you wear your TIALS pieces a lot which equates to half a tree. The trees we plant will absorb 48lbs of CO2 per year as they mature so the longer you wear it and the more the tree ages, the more CO2 will be absorbed and the more we can take care of mama Earth.
Our goal this year is to plant 500 trees to completely offset 22,000 lbs of CO2 but we feel like we can do more, don’t you think? Not only will planting trees offset the carbon footprint which is obviously super important but it also means that we are helping Borneo’s vanishing wildlife and forest. Since our brand is founded in Bali, Indonesia we want to also protect one of the biggest rainforests in the world which is now declining at an alarming rate.
Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and one of the only two remaining habitats for orangutans in the wild. The other is Sumatra, an Indonesian island. The tropical rainforest of Sumatra is expected to "mostly disappear" in twenty years. Bornean orangutan populations have declined by more than 50 percent since around 1950, and only around 1,500 individuals are believed to remain, according to the World Wildlife Fund. This is not ok and we need to do something about it. Through our official partnership with Forest Smoothie® we are able to directly support projects such as The Borneo Nature Foundation, The Orang Utan Project, and Sekolah Adat Arus Kualan’t. Replanting trees prevents soil erosion, restores wildlife habitats and reduces fire risks for healthy biodiversity. It also also engages local communities in conservation while contributing to the global fight to stop climate change and we want you to be a part of it by participating one way or another. We will plant a tree on any collections you order from our website but if you honestly don’t see anything you like, you can simply support the ‘ONE TREE WITH TIALS’ campaign by sharing it on social media with the hashtag #onetreewithtials. Any help counts to raise awareness and for us to create a healthier planet together.
